IPL intense pulsed light therapy – Effective acne treatment solution

Doctor Acnes

What is IPL (intense pulsed light) technology?

Intense pulsed light, or IPL for short, is a non-invasive intervention therapy that uses a device to generate a high-intensity pulsed (non-continuous) light source, operating on a principle similar to laser therapy. However, unlike lasers that use monochromatic light, IPL therapy uses polychromatic light with wavelengths ranging from 400 – 1200nm. Among the methods commonly used for acne treatment, IPL is always prioritized by Dermatologists due to its effectiveness, safety, and few side effects.

Genuine Jeisys Cellec V IPL system at Doctor Acnes

In acne treatment, the mechanism of action of IPL is the photoactivation of porphyrins – metabolites secreted by acne-causing bacteria C. acnes. The interaction of light with porphyrins will create free oxygen radicals that are toxic to the C. acnes bacteria themselves, leading to a decrease in the total number of C. acnes bacteria on the skin. Free oxygen radicals also reduce sebum production from sebaceous glands, reduce inflammation, and tighten pores.

At Doctor Acnes Clinic, clients will be treated with the Cellec V IPL system from Jeisys, approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and performed by a team of highly qualified and experienced medical staff.

Effectiveness of IPL treatment at Doctor Acnes

      Dermatologist evaluates treatment effectiveness

      Treatment time with IPL

Depending on each person’s skin condition, the Dermatologist will prescribe the necessary number of IPL sessions to achieve the desired results. Most patients need to perform from 4 – 6 sessions or possibly more, with a frequency of about 1 – 2 weeks/session. In addition, for severe inflammatory acne conditions, the Dermatologist may prescribe 2 sessions/week continuously for 4 weeks to optimize treatment effectiveness.

After the attack treatment phase, maintenance treatment phases may be prescribed by the Dermatologist every 6 weeks – 3 months. Acne treatment results need to be enhanced and maintained with specific acne medications and cosmeceuticals prescribed by the Dermatologist.

Frequently asked questions about IPL for acne treatment

Is IPL for acne treatment painful?

      • During the implementation of IPL for acne treatment, the skin absorbing light energy emitted from the machine will have a transient stinging sensation. However, thanks to the layer of cold gel applied to the skin area before treatment, it will reduce discomfort for the skin.

Does IPL for acne treatment require the use of oral medication?

      • When examining for acne treatment, the Dermatologist will prescribe a regimen and medication suitable for the acne condition. For cases of mild inflammatory acne, clients may be prescribed additional topical medications in combination with the IPL regimen without needing to use oral medications. For more severe acne cases such as cystic acne, nodular acne, or widespread acne on the back and chest, the use of oral medication is necessary to achieve treatment effectiveness.
